Summary
On August 1, around 8,000 fireworks light up Ofunato Bay in Iwate Prefecture for about 45 minutes from 19:30, closing the Sanriku Ofunato Summer Festival. Star mines, water fireworks and music-synchronized effects unfold near the waterfront of Minato Park, while an illuminated Tanabata boat flotilla cruises the bay — a scene only a harbor town can offer.

The display launches close to the water's edge, so star mines and water fireworks land almost overhead, framed by the harbor's night lights. Minato Park is a 3-minute walk from BRT Ofunato Station, and with car traffic restricted on festival day, arriving on foot from the station is the easiest way in. Paid viewing seats are booked via the official website, and parking combines 760 paid and 608 free spaces — expect the bayside roads to build up before showtime, so plan your arrival and return route with time to spare.
