The Kitakami Michinoku Performing Arts Festival is held in Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture. The torokko-nagashi (floating lantern ceremony), a tradition with over 370 years of history in this region, is held simultaneously, with lanterns dyeing the surface of the Kitakami River in soft light. Approximately 100 performing arts groups present local folk performing arts each year, including the heroic 'Onikenbai' (demon sword dance) performed wearing demon masks and the 'Shishi-odori' (deer dance).
