The "Shiogama Minato Festival" held in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, is counted among Japan's three great boat festivals and is one of the largest maritime festivals in the country. It is held every year on Marine Day to pray for safety at sea and a bountiful catch. On the eve of the festival, a grand fireworks display is held as the first major event of the Tohoku summer festival season. Approximately 8,000 shells are launched over Shiogama Port, with a wide variety of fireworks including star mines illuminating the night sky and the sea surface. Please note that some restricted areas are off-limits.
