Born in 1970 as the eve-of-festival event for the Sendai Tanabata Festival, this display has run for more than half a century and returns for its 57th edition on August 5, 2026, launching some 16,000 shells between 19:15 and 20:30 from three areas: the Nishi Park vicinity, the Hirose River banks and the Kaichu district. The crowds reach about 450,000. Star mines rise as pillars of light over the cityscape, and the 2026 theme — 'HOPE: flowers for the future, blooming together' — dedicates the night sky to the hopes of the people of Sendai. Free viewing is possible, but good spots start filling from early afternoon, so aim to arrive two to three hours before launch time; a paid seat booked in advance guarantees a view. There is no parking near the venues, so come by public transport: about 30 minutes on foot from the west exit of Sendai Station, or three minutes from Omachi-Nishikoen Station on the subway Tozai Line. Food stalls generally take cash, so carry small bills.
