The Hanawa Neputa, a Tanabata event held over two days on August 7 and 8 each year in Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture, features fireworks on the second day. Ten giant Osho (king piece) lanterns shaped like shogi pieces, each over 5 meters tall, and ten barrel drums 2 meters in diameter are lined up on Inamura Bridge spanning the Yoneshiro River, and the 'Nemuri Nagashi' ritual is performed, in which the lanterns are set aflame and floated down the river. The spectacle of fireworks being launched simultaneously with the beating of the drums is intensely powerful, with vibrant fireworks blooming in a deeply atmospheric setting.
