Summary

Held annually on August 16 at Ani River Park in Kitaakita City, Akita Prefecture, as part of the Obon memorial observances. Approximately 1,000 painted lanterns are floated down the clear waters of the Ani River, and about 3,000 shells of fireworks illuminate the night sky. The lantern floating begins at 6:30 PM, and the fireworks start at 7:15 PM. Its convenient access—just a 2-minute walk from Aniai Station—is another appealing feature. Enjoy the contrast between the tranquility of nature and the fireworks blooming in the night sky, and savor this quintessential symbol of a Japanese summer.
