Summary

A large-shell fireworks show on September 5 at the Kinugawa riverbed green park near Sunagahara Bridge in Moka, Tochigi. Some 5,000 shells — large shells, star mines and more — fill the 50 minutes from 7:30 pm, launched close to the viewing area across a broad grass riverbed.

Overview

Around 30,000 people gather on the wide grass of the Kinugawa riverbed for this late-summer show. With launch sites close at hand, the big shells spread wide overhead. By train it is about 15 minutes by taxi from JR Jichi-idai Station; by car, about 20 minutes from Moka IC via Route 408, though traffic restrictions apply around the venue from 5 pm to around 9 pm. There are no food stalls, so plan meals in advance.

Info for International Visitors

Best arrival time

Arriving about an hour before the start works, but good spots on the grass fill earlier, and paths along the river get busy. Traffic restrictions begin at 5 pm, so factor that into arrival plans if driving.

Best viewing spots

Launch sites sit close to the viewing area. The grass along the Kinugawa riverbed is broad, so claiming a spot early secures a relaxed vantage near the Sunagahara Bridge.

With kids

On the grassy riverbed, keep children from running into the crowd and pick a spot a little back from the water. Agree on a meeting point in case anyone gets separated.

Photography tips

Photography is allowed. Launches are close, so a wider frame is safer — and use tripods considerately in crowded areas.

Payment

There are no paid seats and no food stalls, so bring what you need with you. Viewing itself is free.
