Held on the Tone River riverbed in the Akaiwa area of Chiyoda Town, Oura District, Gunma Prefecture, the 'Chiyoda Festival: Kawasegaki' is a traditional festival with over 150 years of history. Centered around sutra chanting by Buddhist monks and floating lanterns (Kawasegaki) to pray for the repose of water accident victims and everlasting peace, the festival features various events including ultra-low-altitude water starmines launched diagonally toward the Tone River, stage performances, and folk dance parades. In addition to fireworks that color the summer night, the fantastical sight of solemnly sending off spirits while watching lanterns float quietly on the river surface is well worth seeing.
