Summary
Kawasegaki, a traditional rite with over 150 years of history held on August 18 on the banks of the Tone River in Chiyoda Town, Gunma. Floating lanterns for those lost to water and prayers for peace are followed by some 6,050 fireworks, including ultra-low water star mines fired diagonally over the river.
Overview
The evening centers on a Buddhist rite in which lanterns are floated down the Tone River, joined by stage performances and folk dancing. The fireworks from 8:10 pm are defined by the water star mines opened at low altitude over the river, their light doubled in the water. Paid seating is available and food stalls line the banks; 2,500 free parking spaces (5:30–9:30 pm) serve the town hall and Chiyoda Junior High School, while most rail visitors take a taxi from Tatebayashi or Kumagaya Station.
