A winter tradition in Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, is the Chichibu Night Festival (Chichibu Yomatsuri), the annual festival of Chichibu Shrine with over 300 years of history. Known for the powerful parade of floats adorned with lanterns and paper lamps, it is counted as one of Japan's three great hikiyama festivals alongside the Kyoto Gion Festival and the Hida Takayama Festival. The floats paraded through Chichibu consist of two kasaboko (flower-tipped floats) and four yatai (floats). It is designated as a National Important Tangible and Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and also as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Every year, December 2 is the eve festival (Yoi-miya) and December 3 is the grand festival. On the night of the grand festival, fireworks are launched, gorgeously enhancing the Chichibu Night Festival. The collaboration of lantern-adorned kasaboko and yatai with the fireworks is a breathtaking spectacle of beauty.
