Summary

This fireworks festival carries on the tradition of the historic Ryogoku Kawabiraki Fireworks Festival. Its origins trace back to the 'Ryogoku Kawabiraki' of 1733 (Kyoho 18), making it the most prestigious fireworks festival in the Kanto region in both tradition and formality. After several interruptions throughout history, it was revived in 1978 as the 'Sumida River Fireworks Festival.' The fireworks are broadly divided into two types: 'warimono,' which burst into spherical chrysanthemum-like shapes, and 'pokamono,' where the shell splits in two in mid-air, releasing stars from within. At the First Venue, located downstream of Sakurabashi Bridge to upstream of Kototoibashi Bridge, a fireworks competition is held featuring pyrotechnicians associated with the Ryogoku fireworks tradition as well as those who have achieved outstanding results in numerous competitions.
