Summary
On September 17 the quiet island of Kozushima, one of Tokyo's remote islands, holds a compact fireworks display from the pier of Kozushima Port. Some 750 shells go up over 30 minutes, including large 7- and 10-gou rounds, best enjoyed in the relaxed island atmosphere.
Overview
Kozushima lies about three hours from Tokyo by high-speed jet ferry from Takeshiba Pier, or roughly two hours twenty minutes from Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula. The launch site sits right at the port's waterfront, so you can watch the shells rise almost directly above the water. With an expected crowd of only about 1,000, there is no crush for viewing space; arrive a little early and settle in near the pier. There are no food stalls at the venue, so plan meals at island restaurants or bring your own.
