On July 31, about 5,000 fireworks rise over Moto-Hakone Bay on Lake Ashi, Hakone, for 30 minutes from 20:00, opening the Lake Ashi Summer Festival Week. By day, the Kosuisai rites send the Hakone Shrine's chief priest across the lake by offering boat to present offerings to the Nine-Headed Dragon deity, with a mikoshi procession along the shore; by night, the bursts mirror on the mountain-ringed water. Hakone-Yumoto Station is about 35 minutes away by bus.
Overview
The six-day Lake Ashi Summer Festival Week opens with the Kosuisai rites and this display. Daytime belongs to the water: the priest crosses by offering boat to present offerings to the lake's guardian deity, while the mikoshi and offering procession move along the shore. After dark, the 30-minute show from 20:00 sends about 5,000 shells over Moto-Hakone Bay, their light doubling on the lake against the mountains. Food stalls line the lakeside, buses run about 35 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto Station, and while 330 paid parking spaces exist nearby, the summer crowds make the bus the safer choice.
