The week's finale belongs to the water and the flame: once the Komagata Shrine rites conclude, the fire is lit on the lake's torii, and the 20-minute display of about 3,500 shells opens with that burning frame behind it. Star-mine strings and underwater pieces run their light across the lake surface, doubled against the mountain silhouettes in a scene unmistakably Hakone. The Hakone-machi Port area draws heavy crowds on festival night; buses take about 40 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto Station (or alight at the Hakone Sekisho ruins stop, 3 minutes on foot), and with only 160 parking spaces (330 yen/hour, partly free), train and bus are the dependable way in.
