A major fireworks event that represents summer in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture. It is counted as one of the Three Great Echigo Fireworks, along with Nagaoka (river) and Katakai (mountain), representing the sea. Its origins date back to the late Edo period, when the Yasaka Shrine in Nishihonmachi, Kashiwazaki City, which traces its lineage to Kyoto's Yasaka Shrine, launched dedication fireworks at a festival praying for the eradication of epidemics. In 1950, the Gion Festival and Kashiwazaki's commercial festival merged, developing into its current form.
