On August 15, the 'Nanbu Fire Festival' — a major summer event in Nanbu Town, Minamikoma District, Yamanashi Prefecture — is a mysterious festival of Bonfire send-off and river memorial services passed down since the Edo period, while also serving as a pest-repelling ritual to protect rice crops from disease and insects. The festival centers on large torches, and at its climax, 108 bonfires lining both banks of the Fuji River for about 2 kilometers dye the night darkness red. A special large-scale star mine display is also not to be missed. Additionally, about 50 night stalls line the venue.
