Ijira Summer Festival

Summary

A summer festival featuring fireworks held around the Ijira Fureai/Sawayaka Dome in Yamagata City, Gifu Prefecture. Rooted in local traditions, the festival features stage shows, folk performing arts, and bazaars. During the day, traditional dragon dance (ryu-mawashi) and juroku-byoshi drumming are performed, and at night, approximately 170 shells light up the night sky. The dragon dance is a ritual originally started as a rain prayer, with powerful drumming, flutes, and gongs playing the juroku-byoshi rhythm while dancers perform a rain-invoking dance.
