The Hida Takayama Tezutsu Fireworks are launched in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, on August 9, in connection with the word "yaku" (misfortune), as a prayer for warding off evil. Over 90 minutes, approximately 180 (planned) handheld firework tubes are ignited. A temporary platform is set up on the riverbed of the Miya River, where about 40 members of the Hida Takayama Tezutsu Group hold bamboo tubes packed with gunpowder and bravely perform amidst showers of sparks.
