A fireworks festival held annually on August 21 in the Shuzenji Onsen town of Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The fireworks launched from a high position on the hill behind Shuzenji Temple can be beautifully seen from anywhere in the hot spring town. This event is held to express gratitude to Kobo Daishi (Kukai), who is said to have founded Shuzenji Onsen approximately 1200 years ago during the Heian period, and is affectionately known locally as 'O-Kobo-san.' Along the Katsura River valley, ryokan inns and restaurants line the streets, with a charming townscape of historic buildings. As there is no parking, use of public transportation is recommended. In case of stormy weather, the event will be postponed to the following day, August 22 (Sat) or August 24 (Mon).
