Summary
On Friday, August 21, 2026, about 2,000 fireworks rise from the hillside behind Shuzenji Onsen in Izu City, Shizuoka, in a 30-minute dedication display from 20:15. Visible from throughout the hot-spring town, the show honors Kobo Daishi (Kukai), credited with opening Shuzenji Onsen some 1,200 years ago, in a festival locals affectionately call "O-Kobo-san". Paid seats are available; with no parking, visitors arrive by train and bus.
Overview
Shuzenji Onsen is said to have been opened by Kobo Daishi in the Heian period, and the grand festival of gratitude, known locally as "O-Kobo-san", closes with fireworks from the high ground behind town. From anywhere along the Katsura gorge, where ryokan and eateries line the stream, the bursts can be seen over the rooftops — some 2,000 shells across about 30 minutes. Reach Shuzenji Onsen by the Tokai bus from Shuzenji Station on the Izuhakone Railway (about 8 minutes), alighting right by the town. Parking is unavailable, so public transport is the way to come. In stormy weather the display moves to the following day, Saturday, August 22, or to Monday, August 24.
