Summary
On 15 August some 3,000 shells rise over the Yahagi River below Yonezu Bridge in Nishio, Aichi, continuing a Buddhist observance for the war dead and drowning victims now in its 78th year. Sutras precede the setting adrift of about 1,500 lanterns on the water, after which the one-hour display begins at 19:30. Meitetsu Yonezu Station is a five-minute walk from the banks.
Overview
The Nishio-Yonezu River Festival began as a memorial rite for those lost in war and to the water, and marks its 78th staging in 2026. On 15 August, around 3,000 fireworks are launched between 19:30 and 20:30 from the Yahagi River below Yonezu Bridge. Earlier in the evening some 1,500 manneto lanterns float on the current to the sound of sutras before the fireworks take over. Launches happen over the river itself, so the embankments on either bank offer close-range views — reached on foot from Meitetsu Yonezu Station, as no parking is available nearby.
