Summary

Tahara's autumn grand festival traces its lineage to the Edo period, unfolding over October 11–12, 2026. The final night belongs to tezutsu fireworks at Hananoki Square: cedar logs hollowed out and packed with powder, held aloft by bearers who walk enveloped in their own cascade of sparks—an Atsumi-region ritual passed down generations. Roughly 90 hand-held tubes plus about 150 launched shells light the darkness, while karakuri-automata floats designated as city cultural property parade by day.

Overview

Hananoki Square is a 12-minute walk from Mikawa-Tahara Station on the Toyohashi Railway. The festival's rhythm splits cleanly: days belong to the lavish karakuri floats with their automated dolls—designated cultural properties—along with children's teodori dance and street performances; nights escalate to the ōdai portable-shrine procession and, on the final evening, the tezutsu tubes and launch fireworks between 17:00 and 21:00. Everything is free to watch. Paid public lots (Central Park and elsewhere) are limited, so the tram-train is the recommended arrival, and stormy weather cancels. Roughly 3,000 people gather for the fireworks night—intimate by fireworks standards. The festival also closes out the same city's October festival calendar, arriving one day after the Atsumi Peninsula Hanabi Taikai held on the other side of Tahara.
