The Toyohashi Fire Festival, held in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, is a fireworks event featuring a variety of performances centered around tezutsu fireworks (hand-held bamboo tube fireworks), a tradition passed down since ancient times in the Higashi-Mikawa region, along with large-cylinder fireworks, rope fireworks, mechanical fireworks, and launch fireworks. Tezutsu fireworks, in which performers hold bamboo tubes packed with gunpowder and release flames while showered in sparks, are a rarity nationwide. The venue is enveloped in silence and excitement as pillars of fire roar skyward and the performers display their quiet yet powerful presence. All viewing is by paid reserved seating, and ticket purchase is required.
