Summary

The 'Kihoku Lantern Festival,' held every summer at Nagashima Port in Kihoku Town, Mie Prefecture, is a major summer event known for the collaboration between giant handmade lanterns created by townspeople and maritime fireworks. The giant lanterns, exceeding 35 meters in length, are crafted with a different theme each year, and their majestic procession across the sea has earned them the nickname 'Nebuta of the Sea.' Small and box-shaped lanterns made by children from local kindergartens, elementary, and junior high schools also line the venue area, and within a warm atmosphere built by the entire community, approx. 3000 shells of fireworks dye the night sky and sea surface.
