Summary

A traditional festival held every August in Kiwa Town, Kumano City, Mie Prefecture, on the riverbed of the clear Kitayama River. The main event is the 'Pillar Festival,' where participants swing tethered torches and hurl them toward a bamboo basket attached to a roughly 20-meter-tall pillar that serves as a sacred vessel. This ritual, in which all disasters are released into the night sky along with the torches, has been performed to pray for the safety of raftsmen, good health, and bountiful catches.
