The Otsu Shiga Fireworks Display takes place 19:30–20:10 on July 23 along the Omi-Maiko Nakahama swimming beach on Lake Biwa, with about 2,000 shells launched from the water. Because the launch positions sit close to the viewing areas, the fireworks feel near at hand, and their colors shimmer across the dark surface after nightfall. Star-mines, underwater star-mines and big single shells make up the program. Access is easy — 5 minutes on foot from JR Omi-Maiko Station and right by Maiko IC on the Kosai road — with 600 spaces at the swimming beach for 2,000 yen a day. Arrive about an hour before the start, as the best lakeside spots fill early. Keep children away from the water's edge and set a meeting point in advance.
