Summary
Ayabe's Minazuki Festival lights up the Yura River in northern Kyoto Prefecture on 25 July. Rooted in Meiji-era memorial lantern floating, its signature event sends some 10,000 lanterns down the river from 19:30, before a roughly 40-minute fireworks display begins at 20:00. Ayabe Station is a ten-minute walk away, and about 1,300 free parking spaces are provided nearby.
Overview
The Ayabe Minazuki Festival grew out of late-Meiji lantern floating for ancestor memorial and is now the town's summer landmark. On 25 July, the Heiwa Kigan Manto Nagashi releases around 10,000 lanterns onto the Yura River at 19:30. Fireworks then fill the sky for about 40 minutes from 20:00, while the Ayabe Yosakoi-style dance adds colour around the venue. The riverbed lies about ten minutes on foot from JR Ayabe Station, with roughly 1,300 free parking spaces at ten sites — though some may turn chargeable, so check signage on the day.
