Overview

The festival's name comes from the Sennichi-mairi belief: worship at Nyoi-ji on August 9 brings the merit of a thousand visits. The evening stacks lights in sequence at Kumihama Park facing Kumihama Bay — the fire character on Mount Kabuto, floating lanterns on the water, then fireworks from 19:30 to 20:30, about 1,500 shells spreading over the bay-side sky. Kumihama Park is a 10-minute walk from Kyoto Tango Railway's Kumihama Station, or about 40 minutes by car from the Kyotango-Omiya IC via Route 312. The free lot (500 cars) opens at 17:00 and fills as lantern viewing begins. Food stalls operate on site — cash is the practical choice. To enjoy the bonfire and lanterns too, arrive in the early evening.
