Overview
Held on July 25 at the Taira no Koremori Historical Village in Nosegawa Village, Nara Prefecture, the Taira no Koremori Grand Festival reaches its 18th edition in 2026. Taira no Koremori, eldest son of Shigemori and grandson of Kiyomori, fought the Genpei War on the Taira side; as the clan's fortunes faded he is said to have fled into the mountains of Yoshino and Kumano, ending his days in Nosegawa after years of wandering. The festival honours his spirit. The day opens with a memorial service at 4:30 pm, then moves through entertainment events, the Tanko lantern gathering, Yasha taiko drumming and a concert as night falls. From 8:00 to 8:30 pm, some 3,000 fireworks light up the sky over the mountain valley — the finale of the evening. Around 1,500 people attended in 2025, giving the event the feel of a village-made celebration far removed from big-city fireworks shows. Access takes planning: from Nankai Koyasan Station it is about 50 minutes by taxi, and by car roughly 60 minutes from the Kihoku-Katsuragi interchange on the Keinawa Expressway. Parking is provided at Adventure Land (Hira 1, Nosegawa Village) for a 1,000-yen fireworks cooperation fee per vehicle, with shuttle buses to the venue planned.
