Summary

The Izumo Shinhwa (Mythology) Festival brings fireworks to the Ozu Kanadachi riverbed park in Izumo, Shimane, for 40 minutes from 20:00 on 22 August. Stage events and food stalls keep the grounds lively, and a companion Bon dance runs along Nikunibiki Central Street (cancelled in severe weather). Shell counts are not published; in 2025 reserved seating was announced as a crowdfunding reward. Buses from Izumoshi Station (alight at Otsu Elementary, then 10 minutes on foot) or Ichibata's Otsu-machi Station (15 minutes) serve the venue, which has no parking.

Overview

The Izumo Shinhwa Festival fireworks launch for 40 minutes from 20:00 to 20:40 on 22 August at the Ozu Kanadachi riverbed park in Izumo, Shimane. Info for International Visitors

Best arrival time

Aim to arrive about an hour before the start. Viewing space in the riverside park fills up from the entrances inward. There is no parking nearby — come by bus from Izumoshi Station (alight at Otsu Elementary School, then a 10-minute walk) or from Ichibata's Otsu-machi Station (15 minutes on foot).

With kids

Some parts of the park are poorly lit after dark, so a small torch makes moving around safer. Crowds grow around the Bon dance and other related events, so agree on a meeting point beforehand.

Photography tips

Photography is allowed, but tripods may be restricted in the seating area — check with staff before setting one up. Shells rise from the riverbed, so keeping the water in the lower frame captures the spread of light.

Payment

Reserved seating has been announced in some years (as a crowdfunding reward) — buy ahead if you want a guaranteed spot. Food stalls generally take cash only, so bring plenty of small bills and coins.
