Summary

How often does a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force academy open to the public? Once a year, on Etajima: the Autumn Festa fills the 1st Service School grounds from 10:00 to 19:00 on October 31 - band concerts, food trucks - before about 1,200 shells close the day over Etajima Bay from 18:00. In stormy weather the stage program is cancelled while vendors and fireworks shift to the next day. From Hiroshima Station, a streetcar-plus-boat chain makes it an easy island detour.

Overview

Two access routes work: streetcar about 35 minutes from Hiroshima Station to Hiroshima Port, then a 25-minute high-speed boat to Koyo Port and a 5-minute taxi; or about 60 minutes by car from Kure via the Ondo and Hayase bridges. As an SDF open-house event, the venue offers the spacious, well-ordered grounds of a base - a setting ordinary festivals cannot match. Parking is free but limited, so arriving by boat is the safer plan. Crowds are modest - around 6,000 in past editions - keeping the base open-house feel unhurried. Return boats get crowded after the finale; check timetables in advance. Combine the trip with Kure, the naval port city, and the day themes neatly around the Yamato Museum and the JMSDF Kure Museum.
