Hofu Tenmangu Shrine Birthday Festival Fireworks

Summary

A festival celebrating the birthday of Sugawara no Michizane, the enshrined deity of Hofu Tenmangu Shrine in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Over three days from August 3 to 5 each year, various celebratory and dedicatory events are held, including a fireworks display and the Manto no Yube (Evening of Ten Thousand Lanterns). At the climax of the festival, approximately 4000 shells including star mines are launched from two locations near Hofu Tenmangu Shrine, gorgeously illuminating the night sky.
