Held every August 15 on the waterfront of Yawatahama Port in Ehime Prefecture, this harbour show sends about 3,500 shells into the sky during the one-hour program starting at 8 pm, drawing some 60,000 visitors. The green space at the Minatto roadside station is the handiest viewing point, with no tall buildings blocking the sky. In stormy weather the event moves to the following day, August 16.
Overview
Yawatahama's summer fixture lights up its port on August 15, with roughly 3,500 fireworks launched inside the harbour between 8 and 9 pm from the area around the Minatto roadside station. Around 60,000 people come to watch each year. The launch site sits close to the shore, and with no tall buildings nearby the green space at Minatto offers a clear, wide view. JR Yawatahama Station is a 20-minute walk away. Twelve temporary parking lots across the city hold 1,600 cars in total, but spaces are limited and public transport is recommended. If the weather turns rough, the display is postponed to Sunday the 16th.
