Summary

Kitakyushu's mass summer festival closes its second and final day with a ten-minute concentrated burst: from 20:20 on September 20, shells fill the sky over Katsuyama Park in the heart of Kokura. The 2026 festival theme is 'Walk Together!! Kitakyushu Pride!!', and the fireworks land as the city-wide party's exclamation mark, framed by the castle-town streets that spread from JR Kokura Station.

Overview

At seven minutes on foot from JR Kokura Station, access could hardly be simpler. There is no dedicated or paid parking nearby; large-scale traffic controls, different each day, cover both festival days, and the organizers ask visitors to skip cars and motorcycles entirely. Viewing is essentially free, with sponsor seating sold separately. The festival draws enormous crowds across two days, and the wave toward the station right after the finale is heavy. Stages and stalls spread across central Kokura on both days, so treat the fireworks as the last act of a full evening rather than a quick pop-in. Traffic-control maps differ by day and are published as PDFs on the official site; organizer contact is the festival promotion association at 093-541-5472.

FAQ

Access

🚃 By Train

Info for International Visitors

Best arrival time

The fireworks run for about 10 minutes from 20:20. Arriving 30–45 minutes before the start still leaves you a choice of spots, but this city-centre venue is a 7-minute walk from JR Kokura Station, so station gates and surrounding routes get crowded. There are no dedicated or paid car parks nearby and crowds stream toward the station right after the finale — come by public transport and allow plenty of time.

Tickets & seats

Viewing around Katsuyama Park is free; a limited run of paid sponsor seats is sold separately through official channels.

With kids

The venue is a park in the middle of town, and children can easily get separated among the food stalls, stage crowds and festival visitors. Agree on a meeting point in advance and keep young children within sight during the busy hours.

Photography tips

Phone and camera photos are fine, but tripods and monopods may be restricted in the paid sponsor seats — check with staff before setting up. With the show lasting only about 10 minutes, decide your shooting mode and framing before it begins.

Payment

Buy the paid sponsor seats in advance where possible. Food stalls generally take cash, so carry plenty of small bills and coins.
