Jazz-town Wakamatsu scores Dokai Bay with 40 minutes of light: from 19:00 on October 24, 4,000-plus-500 shells burst behind the red arches of the Wakato Bridge, sequenced to jazz rhythms. Roughly 300,000 spectators line both banks for this Kitakyushu autumn night. Viewing is basically free, with the Kukinohama and Tobata banks run as paid sponsor areas. Stormy weather means cancellation - no fallback date - announced by 13:00 the same day.

Overview

Both banks are literally station-front: 3 minutes on foot from JR Wakamatsu Station, 5 from JR Tobata. Because spectators spread along two shores of Dokai Bay, crowding feels lighter than at comparably large festivals. Jazz-based town revitalization is Wakamatsu's identity, and music-linked sequencing anchors the program. One 2026 change the organizers flag plainly: no Niagara cascade from the Wakato Bridge this year, so enjoy the bridge purely as backdrop. There is no parking, and driving to the site is discouraged. Stations stay crowded after the finale, but JR returns you directly to Kokura or Kuroasaki. Nearby, the Marine Core hall displays painted lanterns from October 9 through January 11, lit 18:00-22:00, extending the festival mood. A pleasant pattern: wander Wakamatsu's retro streets in the late afternoon, then walk over for the show.
