Summary

Karatsu's established autumn display, run by a committee of the Saga Shimbun newspaper, the city and its tourism association. On October 10, 2026, shells lift off the Matsuura River's surface for about 30 minutes from 19:00. The organizer never publishes a shell count, but launching from a river flowing through the middle of town stacks the bursts against ordinary streetlights and bridge silhouettes. A 10-minute walk from Higashi-Karatsu Station, and no reserve date if weather forces a cancellation.

Overview

The riverside site is about 10 minutes on foot from Higashi-Karatsu Station, close to the town center—close enough that a sensible day pairs a castle-town stroll past Karatsu Castle and the old Karatsu Bank building with the evening fireworks. Day-trippers can also reach the Rainbow Pine Grove, one of Japan's three great pine belts, or the Yobuko morning market without much driving. Food stalls line the banks, and recent crowds run to about 50,000. Because launches come off the water itself, the far bank rewards you with reflections spreading across the river. Cancellation in rough weather comes with no reserve date, so watch the official and tourism-association channels on the day. Because the show is short and dense, arriving 30 to 40 minutes early for a riverside spot is the local habit, and the town's restaurants stay busy well after the finale.
