Overview

Long known as the Katsumoto Noryo Fireworks, this display has marked Obon at the island's northernmost port for close to half a century. From 8 to 9:30 p.m., 2,000 shells rise from the harbor itself — close enough to feel the big shells' pressure wave, with the port's terrain adding its own echo. Reach the island by jetfoil from Hakata Port (about 65 minutes) or ferry from Karatsu-Higashi Port (about 100 minutes); from Gonoura Port the Iki Kotsu bus runs about 30 minutes to the Katsumoto-iriguchi stop right by the venue. Free parking on the island covers 600 spaces.
