A fixture of Shimabara Onsen's summers since 1993, the Gamadasu fireworks take their name from the local dialect for 'hang in there.' From 8:15 p.m., 2,000 shells hang over Shimabara Port, their light doubling on the harbor's surface. In front of the port, some 800 meters of Route 251 close to cars and fill with 80 stalls, while free foot baths sit within reach of the venue. Shimabarako Station is a 5-minute walk away, and drivers can choose among four free city lots totaling 580 spaces — Oyabehama Parking, the Reikyu Park gymnasium lot, Kaihin Park and Fukko Arena. Stalls, foot baths and fireworks over the water: an evening that samples everything Shimabara's night has to offer.
