History

The Sumida River Fireworks Festival traces its origin to the "Suijinsai" ceremony held in 1733 (Kyoho 18), making it one of Japan's most iconic fireworks festivals with over 280 years of history. The fireworks, originally launched to pray for the cessation of epidemics during the Edo-period river-opening season, gave rise to the legendary rivalry between fireworks masters "Tamaya" and "Kagiya" whose cheers are still heard today. Revived under its current name in 1978, the festival is held annually on the last Saturday of July and remains a beloved symbol of summer in Tokyo.
